You can choose to treat everyone with respect or act like a self-righteous jerk. The best part of this game is that your choices will change both your alignment and potential for better items. The customization does not end there, however. You can also customize the look of your character and choose his/her deity. You can choose their sex, race, class, specializations, stats, and even their base alignments (Lawful/Good, Chaotic/Evil). Like any successful D&D campaign, the creation of a character is key, and Neverwinter Nights allows you to fully customize your character in a wide assortment of ways. This game, like many BioWare titles, puts a lot of emphasis on player choice. But that does not mean the ports are perfect. Technology has been able to keep up with the times, so PC games are able to make the switch over to console much easier nowadays. Those of us who are old enough remember the dumpster fire that was the StarCraft port to the N64. I am always skeptical to see how a PC-to-console port works for players. Then again, that is what you can expect from a BioWare RPG. And adding the freedom of choice makes the story all the more interesting. The narrative in Neverwinter Nights has all the twists and turns that you might expect from a game with this pedigree. That is no surprise considering the lead writer was Drew Karpyshyn, the same man who wrote multiple Forgotten Realms novels and the stories for Jade Empire, the Mass Effect franchise, and Anthem. Of course, the plague is only the beginning, as nefarious forces rally together to bring not only Neverwinter to ruin but the entire realm as well.įor fear of giving away too much about the narrative, it must be known that the story in this game is top-notch. Lady Aribeth, the guardian of the Neverwinter, has entrusted you, her champion, in finding the cause of the plague and recovering the means to fight it. A terrible plague known as the Wailing Death has come upon the city, and its inhabitance are reeling under the weight of its vile sting. This story takes place far from the reaches of Bauldar’s Gate and the frosty halls of Icewind Dale within the isolated city of Neverwinter. Games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age would have likely never happened had it not been for the success of Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, not to mention the hundreds of other game designers who were likely inspired by what BioWare had created, and as a piece of gaming history it's nice to see so much of the original Neverwinter preserved here.Welcome to Nintendo Link, and here is my review of Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition for Nintendo Switch. The ability to play online with other players is also likely a welcome addition to many, especially after the game's original GameSpy servers shut down years ago.Īlthough the main campaign's story is terribly thrilling, subsequent expansions and premium modules do a better job of utilizing the Aurora Engine to present a wider variety of gameplay choices, and the end result is something which has been undeniably influential to the gaming medium. Hundreds of thousands of lines of dialog, a plethora of different locations, and the wide variety of gameplay styles offered by different characters and classes in the D&D pantheon give the title both replay value and lasting power. The sheer amount of gameplay on offer in the Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, easily over 200 hours when counting all the modules and expansions , makes it a title worth buying for anyone interested in Dungeons & Dragons video games.
